A Weekend Date with Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crabs

The autumn wind is crisp and bleak—just the perfect time for hairy crabs to be “golden inside and richly meaty.” Thinking back to the frequent mentions of these crustaceans a few months ago, a weekend plan to savor them while enjoying a little outing was quickly put together once our boss gave the green light and everyone’s availability was confirmed. On October 23, 2021, food lovers split into four groups and headed straight for Yangcheng Lake!

Before they grace the dining table, Chinese mitten crabs don their verdant, armor-like shells and wield their large, powerful claws with the flair of a battle-hardened warrior. Yet once they land in the hands of Shanghai’s ravenous foodies, these “Crab Generals” are quickly reduced to nothing but empty shells.

Drink

If there’s one company culture that’s truly unforgettable, it has to be the drinking culture (wink, wink)! This time on our outing, the boss even splurged on a bottle of Feitian Moutai—plus red wine, sorghum liquor, sparkling wine, and more. Since we’re all here to drink, might as well go all out and enjoy every single sip!

After lunch, we made our way to the beautiful shores of Lake Tai and set off on our 30-kilometer ride along the lakeside boulevard. Under a sky of brilliant blue and billowing white clouds, the clean, well-maintained path soon teemed with more than a dozen cyclists chasing one another.

From time to time, the roar of motorcycle engines echoes along the motor vehicle lanes, yet the picturesque lakeside scenery is truly refreshing and uplifting.

Even though we didn’t quite reach our 30km goal in the end, so what? This time, we’re just here to have fun!

Joy

On the morning of the 24th, while we were having breakfast at the hotel, the boss said, “We partied and feasted yesterday, but none of our families got to enjoy a single bite. What should we do?” Well, why not just call the crab vendor and ask him to deliver another dozen or so boxes of Chinese mitten crabs, so everyone can take some home?
