"Nonviolent Communication"
2023-03-11
Recently, the company hosted a uniquely meaningful book-sharing session, during which Allan, Manager of the Technical Services Department, shared with everyone a book that has been profoundly beneficial to him: “Nonviolent Communication.” Below, please join us as he explains what “Nonviolent Communication” is.

Preface.01
Each of us yearns for happiness and for a life in a peaceful, stable, and prosperous society. Once our basic needs—such as food and shelter—are met, it is the connections we forge with one another that truly define the quality of our lives. When I can express my thoughts and be understood, accepted, encouraged, and met with empathy; when I can celebrate the good things that happen—I feel empowered. This sense of empowerment gives me confidence, a deep sense of worth, and the courage to face life’s challenges. By consistently cultivating compassion, care, and understanding within ourselves, we not only soften our hearts but also continually clarify our true inner longings and the kind of life we truly wish to live.
What is Nonviolent Communication.02
Nonviolent Communication offers us a wholly new way of using language—and, more importantly, a distinct mental model and cultural paradigm—that guides us in reestablishing our connection with life and in cultivating fundamental, life-affirming relationships with ourselves, with others, and with the world.
How to Practice “Nonviolent Communication”.03
Shift the focus of attention.
The Language of Alienation from Life
1 Moral Judgment: The Sufi poet Rumi: “Beyond the distinction between right and wrong, there is a field; it is there that I shall meet you.”
2. Comparing oneself: We often compare what we’ve achieved with what others have, which ends up making our lives miserable.
3. Shifting Responsibility: Each person is responsible for their own thoughts, emotions, and actions; otherwise, communication will become estranged from the very fabric of life.
The Four Essential Elements of Nonviolent Communication
01 Non-judgmental observation: Distinguish between observation and commentary; you are not required to remain completely objective, nor should you offer any commentary.
02 Experiencing and Expressing Feelings: I don’t want you to just “think” your feelings—I’m asking you to actually express them.
03 Take responsibility for your feelings and identify the true needs: Pay attention to the other person’s expressed feelings and needs. By focusing on our own needs, desires, expectations, values, or thoughts, we stop blaming others and instead take responsibility for our own feelings.
04 Make Specific Requests Rather Than Demands: When making a request, we should strive to avoid vague, abstract, or ambiguous language and clearly state what we want, rather than what we don’t want.
Applications of Nonviolent Communication
1. Listen attentively and provide feedback.
2. Learn how to love yourself.
3. Use coercive force to prevent harm.
4. Learn to be grateful.
Closing Remarks for the Sharing Session – END
This book-sharing session has now come to a successful close. We hope that, through this event, participants will gain a deep understanding of the true meaning of “Nonviolent Communication” in their future work and daily life, thereby strengthening interpersonal connections—enabling them to express themselves fully while also cultivating empathy and understanding for others, and ultimately fostering friendly, peaceful coexistence.
