Book Sharing Session (Session 2) | I Read, I Share, I’m Happy!
2019-07-22
The more one reads,
One’s appearance naturally changes,
Many times,
You may think that many of the books you’ve read have simply vanished into thin air,
No longer remembered,
In fact, they are still potential.
In one’s temperament,
In terms of speech,
In the boundless expanse of the heart,
Of course, it may also manifest itself in everyday life and in writing.
— San Mao, “I’ll Give You a Horse”
As the ancients said, “Books are like medicine; when read well, they can cure ignorance.” Throughout one’s life, we grow through reading and, in turn, enrich our reading through growth. At this month’s company book-sharing session, General Manager Ms. Lan Lei shared with us the book “Square and Circle,” authored by Ding Yuanzhi.

Many people regard “The Art of Being Square and Round” as a motivational book; others see it as a practical guide—a key that can unlock the door to happiness. This book expounds the fundamental principles and general guidelines of the “way of square and round,” progressively unfolding the life wisdom of blending the two, applying them in tandem, and allowing them to transform into one another. In doing so, it helps readers understand what it means to be “square” in character and “round” in how one navigates the world—when to embrace roundness to uphold one’s principles, and when to hold fast to one’s principles in order to integrate roundness.
General Lan extends the relationship between the square and the circle to Zhuangzi’s philosophical outlook: Zhuangzi’s ideal way of navigating life is to be outwardly conforming yet inwardly unchanging. Externally, one should “harmonize with the light and blend with the dust,” just like everyone else; internally, however, one must maintain an unwavering inner stillness—“alone communing with the spirit of Heaven and Earth, without arrogantly asserting oneself over all things.” Even in the face of a chaotic and mundane world, one can cultivate inner tranquility.
“Harmonize with its radiance, blend with its dust: the Tao is vast and empty, yet its use never wanes. Deep and profound, it seems the source of all things. It blunts the sharp edge, unravels the tangled confusion, harmonizes with its radiance, and blends with its dust. Clear and still, it seems to linger in existence. I do not know whose child it is—perhaps it precedes the Emperor of Heaven.”

Afterward, we delved into the Law of Attraction and the power of belief, sharing many insights with everyone. We also explored the perspective of Kazuo Inamori, author of “The Way to Live”: “Life and work outcomes equal mindset × passion × ability.” Here, mindset represents the way we conduct ourselves; our moral compass must always point in the right direction. When combined with passion and capability, this foundation leads to more fulfilling life and career results. Participants then shared their own understandings and reflections on the interplay between “square” and “circle,” drawing from diverse perspectives and personal experiences. Finally, we presented flowers and certificates of honor to this issue’s “Reading Joy Star,” expressing our gratitude to General Manager Lan for recommending excellent books and for sharing them with all of us.

Heaven is round, Earth is square—vast and boundless. Within this vast expanse, human beings are as tiny as a mustard seed. Yet when one masters the profound wisdom of the Way of the Circle and the Square, heaven and earth shrink to insignificance, and life itself becomes truly great. For in that moment, you have truly seen the world for what it is and truly understood yourself.
